Everything in the universe is energy, and everything radiates energy. From the earth itself, with its mountains, rivers, and oceans, to the creatures who inhabit the earth. Human beings are no exception. Through us, flows powerful energy. Every cell of our bodies absorbs and radiates energy. This is something that has been known for thousands of years through many different cultures and traditions. This is knowledge that transcends any one belief system or religion. It is a powerful knowledge that is available to every one of us to understand and benefit from.
The human body has seven energy centers. These are sometimes called the chakras, which basically means ‘wheel’. To picture how these energy centers work, imagine rivers of energy moving through the body as passing through these wheels, flowing freely. A little like how energy can be harnessed by a windmill or a water wheel in order to use the energy how we choose, so too can we harness the power of these energy centers. In order to fully understand the energy centers and why they are so important to health and wellbeing, it is important to understand how the energy centers correspond to some of the most important parts of the body.
Where are the Energy Centers?
If you can imagine a line of energy running along the body, from the base of the spine to the top of the head, the seven energy centers are located along this line in the following places:
The Root (sometimes called the Base)
This is located at the base of the spine, where you sit, linked to your legs. This energy center is associated with the earth, with being grounded and some of the more human aspects of survival. It is here that your adrenaline response is based, controlling how you react to danger through the fight-or-flight response. The color most associated with this center is red. When this is blocked, the person may experience high levels of fear and anxiety.
The Sacral (sometimes called the Naval)
This energy center is located in the pelvic area, somewhere between the navel and the base of the spine. This energy center, situated as it is within the lower part of the abdomen, is associated with the organs found here such as the bladder, kidneys, and reproductive system. It is also considered the pleasure center and has links to the feelings of desire and sexuality. However, this is also an area associated with emotion and creativity. The color most associated with it is orange. Any blockages here can result in emotional and sexual problems, as well as obsessive behavior.
The Solar Plexus
Located in the upper abdomen, near the stomach, the third energy center is connected to a person’s confidence and their sense of power, personal worth and self-esteem. It controls the organs located in this part of the body, including the pancreas and digestive system. This is the center of the emotional life and so it impacts on how a person feels; the joy and laughter, the sadness and anger. This area is associated with the color yellow. If this is blocked, the person may exhibit signs of frustration, paranoia, and anger.
The energy center situated the level of the heart is concerned with love, as you might expect! This is the center of empathy, compassion, kindness, and peace. This is the energy center that allows us to fall in love, and yet it is also the center of self-love and acceptance; the place that enables us to love ourselves and attain true happiness. The Heart energy center or chakra is also linked to the organs and functions of the body found at this level; for example, the lungs and breath, the arms, and hands. This center is associated with the color green, a color also associated with growth. A blockage here can be revealed in problems in the respiratory system, cardiovascular system, and ability to empathize or show compassion.
The Throat energy center is all about communication. It is from here that the voice and ability to express ourselves comes from. It is also associated with musicality, hearing, the process of having ideas and the ability to heal. Physically it is linked to the neck, shoulders, and glands such as the thyroid and parathyroid. The color associated with this energy center is turquoise, aqua, or light blue. If this area is blocked, communication problems are common.
The Brow (or Third Eye)
This is one of the most important energy centers and is found in the middle of the forehead, between the eyes and slightly above them. This is an energy center strongly connected to the spiritual life. It enables us to question reality, tap into our intuition, and understand the world around us. It is often called the third eye as it is connected to how we see the world, and how we perceive our lives. This is where dreams and memories are held, and its color is indigo. A blockage here can result in depression, closed-mindedness, and reluctance to embrace change.
This is located at the very top of the head and is the highest energy center. It is most connected to a higher consciousness, representing the freedom of full spiritual awakening, knowledge of God and destiny. This energy center is linked to the brain and central nervous system, and so it also has links to our cognitive ability. The color of the Crown center is white or violet. A blockage here can mean mental ill health.
Why are the Energy Centers Important?
Energy centers are important because they do not always function effectively. They can become blocked, and this can lead to various problems with both physical health, mental health, and sense of emotional and personal wellbeing. By stimulating the energy centers, opening them up by removing blockages and allowing the energy to flow freely once again through the body, we can each access incredible benefits. When the energy flows, it draws in more and more positive energy, and expels the negative, allowing each individual to reach their true potential.
